Mousuni Island Tour - This is a beautiful Gangetic Delta island, near the coast of Bay Of Bengal and is very near Kolkata. The island is a paradise for bird watchers. The Island is a small isolated weekend gateway for 1 or 2 days from Kolkata. It is located at a distance of about 160 kilometer from Kolkata. The Island is an untouched virgin island lies at a sub division of Namkhana block. The Island lies in the confluence of river and the sea. Mousuni forms a part of Gangetic Sunderban delta, the lives of the people living here are very uncertain as the island is frequently hit hard by changing climatic conditions, unpredictable rainfall, rising sea level and coastal erosion. Due to development constraints the virgin nature of the island remains untouched.
On the way towards Mousumi from Kolkata you experience gradually the scenic landscapes changes. From Urban landscape to rural farmlands, the Ganga riverside you reach Namkhana and cross the river then you are first arrive on the Bakkhali Island then take right and reach Durgapur Ghat, again you cross the river and reach the isolated Mousuni where you come across narrow road made of bricks, on one side huge farmlands, small canals for fisheries, huts of the locals made of mud and the roof top is made of tin. Every house has cows and sheeps as domestic pets and locals also keep chickens & ducks. Fishing is the most important profession in part of the world and you will see local people weaving nets, drying nets on the roadside. The island is full of dense greenery along with small huts of the locals, agricultural farm lands those spread over landscapes. Being here you will get mesmerizing effect by the symphony of birds and sound of waves. At sunset Mousuni get covered with thick layers darkness absolute silence prevails with only the sounds of small insects audible. At dawn wake up call will be the sounds twitter and chirping of numerous birds those inhabit the island. Mousuni is a nature lovers destination and offers the sea, sandy beaches, bird watching, sky watching and a adventurous camp stay. Do not expect any luxury services here. Foods are all freshly prepared and served hot.
What to see: From here the nearest local watchables include “Baliara” lies at a distance of about 3 kilometer to the north (here the accommodations in tents are available for tourists). Though the road condition to “Baliara” is a bit bumpy in the beginning but later one will get concrete roads. The locals also called it “SALT”. On the way to “Baliara” or “SALT” at Mousuni the scenic beauty of the landscapes comprises of agricultural fields of potatoes, chili and tomatoes these are mainly cultivated here at Mousuni. The route to “Baliara” is though the dense thickness of Pine and Juniper trees. As far as our naked eyes can see, “Baliara” is a long silent beach of the Island. During the sunset at “Baliara” along with the deep silence of the beach creates a different ambience at the Island. As Mousuni is a small paradise for birdwatchers, one can visit the nearest “Kakramarir Char” a small piece of land where numerous birds gather every day morning. The silence of the land continuously gets debarred by chirping sounds of numerous birds those visit here every day some of these includes White Billed Sea Eagle, Barn Shallow, Common Myna, Common Kingfisher, Long Billed Stork, Cormorant and many more.
